The Hymns of Isaac Watts

I know.... no one likes hymns anymore. I think that is tragic. I want to expose you to a great thinker, theologian and poet. His name is Isaac Watts. He was born in Southhampton, England, on July 17, 1674. That makes him 333 years old this year!!! His father served several prison terms because of his non-conformity. He refused to yield to the church of England. Issac was a non-conformist also and his hymns reflect his rich faith and unswerving devotion to truth in Christ. Issac Watts fought for the truth that many of us cherish today. His concepts of grace were revolutionary. Here is a sample for your benefit and for God's praise!

Hymn 43 Part !
Adam, our Father and our head,
Transgress'd, and justice doom'd us dead;
The fiery law speaks all despair;
There's no reprieve nor pardon there.
But, O unutterable grace!
The Son of God takes Adam's place;
Down to our world the Saviour flies,
Stretches his arms, and bleeds and dies.
Justice was pleased to bruise the God,
And pay its wrongs with heav'nly blood;
What unknown racks and pangs He bore!
Then rose; the Law could ask no more.
Amazing work! look down, ye skies,
Wonder and gaze with all your eyes;
Ye heav'nly thrones, stoop from above,
And bow to this mysterious love.
Lo! they adore th' incarnate Son,
And sing the glories he hath won;
Sing how he broke our iron chains,
How deep he sunk, how high he reigns!
Triumph and reign, victorious Lord,
By all the flaming hosts ador'd;
And say, dear Conqueror, say how long
Ere we shall rise to join their song.
Send down a chariot from above,
With fiery wheels, and paved with love;
Raise us beyond th' ethereal blue,
to sing and love as angels do.
May we come to enjoy Christ in all his fullness..... in us!

I think you should read some of his books. "Logic..." is a good one to start with. Isaac Waats was an interesting man and his life is worth studying. I am not so sure that he would have considered anything he ever did "revolutionary" though. The revolution already happened with the death of death in the death of Christ (which happens to be the title of a book by Owen who pastored the same congregation that Watts did at an earlier time- also a must read for any teacher if you haven't had a chance to go over it). Watts certainly was a dissenter and may have approved of that title- but he may have been offended if you called him or anything he did revolutionary- as he would have seen himself as faithful to the teachings of Christ passed down through a very long chain of Godly men. Isaac Waats' hymns are wonderful and a truly great blessing from God, not because he did anything new, but because he was faithful to our Lord and exercised the gifts he was given. His completion of the good works prepared for him to do before the world began is a wonderful sign of faith and our Lord's providence. Those who despise hymns are fools; but those who want to sing anything they feel like should consider the theological and philosophical training of Isaac Waats and take heed to doctrinal purity. His hymns are not the way they are for no reason. Great hymn writer, great poet, wonderful theologian, and rigorous and exacting philosopher- I hope all his fans consider out of what his hymns (by which he is chiefly remembered at this point) have flowed.

I see that the grammar of my last post may be confusing at one point. Joseph Caryl and John Owen preceded Isaac Waats in the pastorate at the chapel at Mark Lane. Isaac Waats headed the chapel beginning in 1702 (after some time as assistant pastor). I hope that that clears up any confusion.
